Contraceptives

The following contraceptives have been confirmed by the manufacturer as being free from animal ingredients. However they will probably have been tested on animals.

This by no means an exhaustive list - please do contact the manufacturer for details if the product you are interested in is not listed here.

Important note: Unless otherwise stated these products are not registered with The Vegan Society: the information was supplied by the manufacturers, who may change the ingredients and production methods without informing us. Do check first!

Condoms

Latex condoms usually contain the milk protein casein. Some also contain milk powder. However the following are animal-free:

  • Durex:  Condoms – Avanti Ultima (confirmed Sept 10)
  • Pasante:  Condoms – Trim, Large, Naturelle, Ribbed, Xtra Sensitive, Delay, Mixed Flavours, Extra Condoms, Unique (confirmed Sept 10)
  • Sir Richard's Condom Company - Classic Ribbed, Extra Large, Pleasure Dots, Ultra Thin (confirmed Aug 11)  

Oral Contraceptives

  • Pfizer:  Femulen contains no animal-derived products. (confirmed Aug 08)

Contraceptive Patches

  • Janssen-Cilag:  Evra contraceptive patches contain no animal-derived products. (confirmed Sept 10)

IUDs

  • Nova T380 copper IUD (confirmed Nov 10)
  • As a general rule copper IUDs are unlikely to contain animal ingredients

Long-Acting Reversible Implant

  • Schering-Plough:  Implanon contains no animal-derived products. (confirmed October 10)
