Home > About Us > Ethical Purchasing Policy

The current Vegan Society Ethical Purchasing Policy was approved in July 2006:

"While pursuing our primary purpose of promoting veganism so as to eliminate exploitation of or cruelty to any animal, we will ensure that we consider human exploitation and environmental impact in our future purchasing decisions.

"UK sources will be approached first for all future stocked items and the Vegan Business Network will be consulted on major purchases. Any goods coming from developing countries will be purchased only if we know that the working conditions of those producing the goods are reasonable and meet the approval of local labour organisations.

"Ideally, we will obtain certification from bodies such as the Fair Trade Organisation which monitor working conditions. We are aiming to source as much merchandise as possible under the Fair Trade/Organic certification.

"We will explore the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of using recycled and recyclable materials, principally paper, in our future projects.

"For major decisions (with a value of over £5,000) we will record our conclusions and the key reasons for our decisions in writing.

"We will aim to regularly review and increase the energy efficiency of our premises and explore eco-friendly energy options."
