Burns' Night

Rabbie Burns might not have been vegetarian, never mind vegan, but his respect for and love of animals is clear from many of his poems. From 'To a Mouse' come the immortal lines:

I'm truly sorry Man's dominion
Has broken Nature's social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An' fellow-mortal!

What better way, then, to celebrate Rabbie's birthday than by tucking into neeps, tatties and some delicious, cruelty-free vegan haggis?

First of all, make sure that you're kitted out appropriately. You'll be wanting full highland dress, and luckily you can now get wool-free kilts and vegan sporrans so there's no excuses for half measures.

Haggis

- make your own or pop into your local healthfood store - MacSweens Vegetarian Haggis is the most widely available brand.

Neeps and tatties

- boil them and mash them and add a bit of Pure margarine and pepper. Difficult it's not, delicious it is.

For afters, you'll be wanting some shortie, which usually has butter in it. You can either make your own or have a look in the Animal Free Shopper for vegan shortbread.

Wash it a' doon wi' a wee dram! Slainte Mhor!
