Alternative Healthcare

In the event that vegans become ill, what do they do? Many opt for a visit to an alternative practitioner instead of visiting their GP. One of the main reasons for this is that the medicines prescribed by the GP will have been tested on animals and may also contain animal-derived ingredients. However, it isn't always necessary to avoid the GP's surgery completely as they should be able to make a diagnosis. They are also able to refer people to other practitioners on the NHS e.g. homoeopaths (limited availability), nutritionists, dietitians, osteopaths, etc.

If choosing an alternative practitioner the following addresses should provide a starting point. If writing to any of the organisations below, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope. When first making contact with a practitioner ensure they are aware of your diet and lifestyle, and that you require completely animal-free medication e.g. some homoeopathic tablets contain lactose (milk derivative) although you can obtain liquid or sucrose-based pilules.
