The Gelatine Connection
All photographic (light sensitive) films and papers are covered by a thin emulsion that contains a small quantity of gelatine.
Called "the classic colloid" by chemists, gelatine is extracted from bones and hides of cattle. It serves as a binder in which silver halide crystals are dispersed and grown during the emulsion-making process. Its usefulness for this application is due primarily to the optical clarity of gelatine and ability to absorb from five to ten times its weight in water without dissolving at ordinary temperatures.
Digital Cameras
A wide range of digital systems are now available which are animal-free.
Printing out digital photos
Inkjet 'photo' papers are printer papers with a high gloss finish for use when printing out your own digital photos. They often contain gelatine, but not always.
