Plan ahead if possible

Are you going into hospital? You can ring ahead to find out about the hospital’s vegan offering. Call the switchboard, and ask for the catering department. Once you've made contact, find out the following information:

  • The best member of ward staff to speak to about catering, such as the housekeeper
  • Are vegan options on the main menu, a separate menu, or made to order?
  • Will there be a delay between ordering and receiving vegan food, and, if so, how will the catering service fill this gap?
  • Provision of fortified plant milk and vegan spread

If the catering department has any queries about vegan food, Dietitian Heather is happy to help. Please provide them with our contact details.

Ward staff may have limited understanding of vegan nutrition. You might find it useful to complete this form, and use it to explain your needs.

How can I help?

Whether you want to rate it or slate it, please consider providing the hospital with feedback about your experience of vegan hospital food.

There are a number of different ways of sharing your experience. During your stay, you can ask to speak to the nurse in charge. You can also use the hospital’s website to locate information about how to contact the nurse in charge of the ward or a department manager, or how to submit feedback in other ways, such as contacting the hospital’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service, or the independent Patient Advice and Support Service in Scotland. Another option is to share your experience on the NHS Choices website.

We would also like to hear from you. If you would like to share your experience of vegan hospital food with us, please email campaigns[at]vegansociety[dot]com.
