Thank you for your email and interest in Plaid Cymru and our policies.
As Plaid Cymru's MEP I do a great deal of work on animal welfare - cruelty to animals has no place in today's society. I was one of the MEPs who was heavily involved in the campaign to put a stop to cosmetic testing on animals, I am also calling for an end to animal experiments for household product ingredients by 2018 and for more money to be spent on non-animal alternative tests to reduce the numbers of animal experiments. I was also the author of European Parliament reports on pet passports. I am the spokesperson for my group in the European Parliament on animal welfare law. I also supported the ban on seal products in the EU. I oppose both cloning animals for food and EU funding for bull fighting.
If re-elected I will continue my work campaigning for animal rights. I also have my own animal welfare campaign that I would like to ask the Vegan Society and your supporters to support. I believe that in order for us to really tackle the problem of animal welfare, we need a European Commissioner with specific responsibility for animal welfare. This Commissioner would ensure that the welfare of animals is considered when drawing up new legislation or when taking up complaints about animal cruelty. It would also send out a strong message to the rest of the world that the EU takes animal welfare seriously. After the European elections on May 22nd, a new Commission will be appointed, one Commissioner from each of the twenty-eight Member States. Each Commissioner is given responsibility for areas of policy and I want to ensure that one of the 28 is charged with looking after animal welfare. My petition which can be found here, please pass it on to your contacts to increase support for this important campaign.
