Co-option as a trustee to add financial insight and to potentially fill the role of Treasurer of The Vegan Society.
Applications for co-option as a trustee to potentially fill the role of Treasurer of The Vegan Society are invited by 15 September. The co-option would be effective only until the AGM in May 2024. The co-optee would then be able to stand for election at that AGM for a full term (usually 4 years). Like all trustees, candidates for co-option must have been full members of the society for at least a year and be aged 16 or over on the date of appointment.
The Treasurer’s core role is to inform trustees’ discussions of financial matters. Candidates should therefore be skilled and experienced in interpreting financial information and explaining it to a non-specialist audience. Essential skills the candidate must possess are the technical ability to understand financial statements, to reconcile budgets against financial metrics and to critically assess accounts. An accountancy qualification, such as an AAT Level 3 Diploma or equivalent, is desirable but not required.
Currently, the time commitment is monthly meetings usually lasting three hours. Training would be approximately 1.5 days per year. Reviewing monthly management accounts/financial information is a core task that may require approximately a half day a month. Additional time is required when considering the annual budget and accounts. Emails may at times take a few hours per week, particularly in the approach to a Council meeting or AGM. The Treasurer is supported by our Finance Manager who prepares Management Accounts and our statutory Accounts are prepared by an external accountancy firm, so the time required beyond the normal trustee role is limited.
