Statement by Vegan Society CEO, Libby Peppiatt

The Vegan Society welcomes the government’s plan to increase the provision of fruit, vegetables and plant-based proteins in school meals in England by 2027

We also applaud the removal of the outdated, mandatory, ‘three portions of meat per week’ law that was enacted more than a decade ago, since when the devastating health, environmental and ethical impacts of meat and dairy over-consumption have become even more abundantly clear.

Promoting healthy alternatives such as pulses, soya mince, tofu and mycoprotein-based meat substitutes in meals, and recommending fortified, unsweetened, plant-based milk alternatives to dairy are positive moves and the government should be commended for its action.

The Vegan Society lobbied hard for positive plant-based changes to school meals and today is a day to celebrate, but the job is far from done and we will continue to work towards the even wider adoption of veganism, for the benefit of all animals, human or otherwise, and the planet we inhabit.
