Nutrition

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), vitamin D3 (plant derived cholecalciferol), iodine, selenium, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Cyanocobalamin is used because it is stable and it is readily converted in the body to methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin which are the two active forms of vitamin B12. Here is an independent commentary on the different forms of cobalamin (vitamin B12)

One dose of VEG 1 Baby and Toddler provides EU Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) of:
Vitamin B12 (5μg – 200%), Vitamin A (400μg – 50%), Vitamin C (30mg – 37%), Vitamin D (10μg – 200%), Iodine (50μg – 33%), Selenium (10μg – 18%).

Dietary sources of vitamin B12 and vitamin D are limited therefore doses above 100% have been included. Vitamin B12 is also poorly absorbed from supplements and a higher dose is recommended. Vitamin D supplementation in the UK is advised at a dose between 8.5 – 10ug and therefore the 10ug included here is appropriate for this population. For those nutrients below 100%, requirements can be more easily met through dietary intake. Vitamin A should not be supplemented to 100% as excessive intake can be dangerous.

The UK government recommends that all children aged six months to five years take a supplement containing these vitamins. These nutrients are essential to healthy development. For example, babies need vitamin A for their developing immune system, eyesight, and healthy skin. Vitamin C is important for overall health, immune system and it also helps with iron absorption.

No, VEG 1 Baby and Toddler is free of sugar.

Yes, VEG 1 Baby and Toddler is free from ingredients containing gluten, wheat and lactose.

It is important to include plenty of iron and calcium rich foods in the diet as they will also provide a good source of protein. Omega 3's are found in a selction of seeds and rapeseed oil and can be easily incorporated into the diet. There ramins a lack of evidence into long chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for vegan health and no current government recommendations exist. Some parents may wish to consider a long chain omega-3 fatty acid supplement due to the role of omega-3 fats in brain, nerve and eye development if intake of food sources are low. Omega-3 is unsuitable with other vitamins in a liquid form and so it was not included in VEG 1 Baby and Toddler for this reason.
