Bear.
As we stand together
On this threshold
I know it is the last.
You know it too.
I know with my mind
You, all through your body.
It is time:
For us to part
In the way we were
And to merge
Into what we will become
You were my experience
Of grace and power.
When we moved together,
We were something stronger and deeper
Than anything else.
And an anchor within
Even now.
You were joy
When I heard you nicker
In the morning
On my approach (with your breakfast!).
You were clever
Letting yourself out
of field and stable
when you chose.
You were funny
with your impulses, likes and dislikes:
(“No thank you” to wormer in your food
Spreading up the stable wall!).
You were loved and admired
By so many.
For you were kind and gentle.
Now I deal with
The physical husk of what
Was you and yours- generously-
As you would have it.
At each moment of letting go
of these things,
I am getting ever closer
To you.
As the curtain of tears
Is drawn aside
Bit by bit
Your soul is changing
The shape of mine:
A new creation
- and a better one-
is born.
And this Charlie- My Beloved Honey Bear-
Is beyond loss
But never beyond love.
