» Important new government petition created by Grow Green team

The Vegan Society’s Grow Green team has recently created a petition that calls on the government to move farming subsidies away from environmentally destructive farming, and towards farming which provides benefits for the environment.

Farmers who exploit farm animals have long enjoyed unconditional support through subsidies paid for by the public. However, Brexit has brought the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to the fore, along with its problems, resulting in the tide of public opinion turning against the current formulation of the CAP.

The implication of moving subsidies away from farms that provide no environmental benefits, like animal farms, is that a lot of them will be unable to operate without this support. We want the government to create alternative, vegan-friendly livelihoods for these farmers instead.

At 10,000 signatures the government will respond to the petition, and when it reaches 100,000 signatures it will be considered for a debate in parliament. The Vegan Society has worked hard to establish good relationships with a number of parliamentarians who are sympathetic to our cause, and so any debate in parliament will give us the opportunity to make sure the vegan message is heard on a political platform, and with it, the opportunity to call out cruel, exploitative farming.

This petition is one in a long line of petitions and actions directed at the government, and because of this, the petition is aimed at building public appetite for subsidy reform. Many high profile organisations and individuals, including some Tory MPs, have recently called for drastic reform of the farming subsidy system. Now is a great time to keep the momentum. Over the coming months, our recommendations will get more specific, but before this stage we need to prepare the groundwork and gain general, broad support from the public and other organisations.

The Grow Green team is working with various MPs to try and secure a debate in parliament about specific topics from the Grow Green report, but any opportunities we can get to raise the benefits of supporting a transition to produce plant-protein crops for human consumption should be made the most of. If we are to reach this 100,000 milestone, then we need the help of as many people as possible to sign and to spread the word.

You can sign the petition here.
