The Food Strategy
The Vegan Society’s highest policy priority in 2026 is the inclusion of a plan to promote plant-based foods and diets in the Good Food Cycle food strategy published by the government last July. Other countries, including Denmark in 2023, have already introduced comprehensive strategies to realise the health, environmental and economic benefits associated with a transition towards more plant-rich diets.
In September 2025, the society was among 48 organisations that collaborated to publish a joint position paper proposing ten policy measures to promote the production and consumption of healthy, sustainable plant-based foods in the UK. Reaping the benefits of plant-rich diets: the ten point plan also explains how these measures will meet the government’s own goals for the food strategy. The proposals have now been endorsed by more than 60 organisations and experts.
As Defra develops the substance and policy proposals of the Good Food Cycle, we will be working with partners in the food, health, sustainability and commercial sectors to promote the plan.
Our most recent initiative is a briefing on plant-rich diets and national food security, published in March 2026.
