» Elections in Scotland and Wales: Email your local candidates today

With the elections in Scotland and Wales fast approaching, now represents a significant opportunity to urge candidates to commit to supporting a shift towards healthier, more sustainable plant-rich diets

There is an urgent need for a shift towards more plant-rich diets in the UK, to improve public health, meet our net zero commitments, strengthen our food security, and move to end the exploitation of non-human animals.

With elections in Scotland and Wales taking place in May, now is a critical moment to ensure this shift is firmly on the agenda for the next governments in Edinburgh and Cardiff. A just transition towards healthy, sustainable plant-based diets, and away from the inefficient and cruel practices of animal agriculture, must be a priority for policymakers.

You can help make this happen by contacting candidates in your local area to ask them to commit to supporting policies which help shape a fairer, healthier, more sustainable food system.

Emailing your local candidates will not only raise awareness of this issue, but also make it clear that their voters in their constituencies care – encouraging them to make it a priority. Below you’ll find template emails for candidates in Scotland and Wales. As always, feel free to personalise as you wish, making sure to keep messages brief and polite.

Thank you for taking the time to take action. If you do contact your candidates, please let us know of any responses you receive at [email protected].

Subject line: Scottish Elections – Supporting a transition to a healthier, more sustainable food system

Dear [Candidate name]

I am a constituent in [Location], and am writing to ask whether, if elected, you will support a just transition towards a more sustainable plant-based food system in Scotland, as a crucial step to meet our climate targets, enhance public health, strengthen our food security, and truly deliver on animal welfare.

Experts now overwhelmingly agree that a shift towards plant-rich diets and away from intensive animal agriculture will be essential to meet our net zero commitments and improve our public health. Yet the Scottish Government has not so far acknowledged the role of dietary change as an effective climate mitigation measure, while much more needs to be done to achieve the goals for consumption of healthy plant-based foods that have been set. A recent policy paper, Reaping the Benefits of Plant Rich Diets: The Ten Point Plan, sets out pragmatic, achievable measures to support a shift towards a more plant-rich food system, while supporting farmers to adapt to emerging challenges.

This is an extremely important issue to me, and to many other voters who care deeply about our environment and animals. [if you can, add a sentence to express your personal reasons for supporting this call, as this will resonate most with your candidates. If not, you may wish to use this statistic: 69% of people in the UK say they'd like to eat more plant-based foods than they currently do, and a further 69% believe the Government should do more to help them do so.]

As a local constituent, I hope that you will commit to helping shape the transition towards a healthier, more sustainable food system in Scotland.

I wish you the best of luck with your election campaign and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best wishes

Subject line: Welsh Elections - Supporting a transition to a healthier, more sustainable food system

Dear [Candidate name],

I am a constituent in [Location], and am writing to ask whether, if elected, you will support a just transition towards a more sustainable plant-based food system in Wales, as a crucial step to meet our climate targets, enhance public health, strengthen food security, and truly deliver on animal welfare.

Experts now overwhelmingly agree that a shift towards plant-rich diets and away from intensive animal agriculture will be essential to meet our net zero commitments in the UK and improve our public health. In Wales, cross-party stakeholders are increasingly calling on the next Government to introduce a comprehensive food resilience plan and embed food and diets into the Well-Being of Future Generations Act, offering a powerful opportunity to champion plant-rich diets within these frameworks.

A recent policy paper, Reaping the Benefits of Plant Rich Diets: The Ten Point Plan, sets out pragmatic, achievable measures to support a shift towards a more plant-rich food system in the UK, while supporting farmers to adapt to emerging challenges, which may be of interest.

As a local constituent, I hope that you will commit to helping shape the transition towards a healthier, more sustainable food system in Wales that experts agree is necessary.

I wish you the best of luck with your election campaign and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best wishes,
