The Food Strategy
The Vegan Society’s highest policy priority in 2025 is the inclusion of a plan to promote plant-based foods and diets in the food strategy announced by the government last December. Other countries, including Denmark in 2023, have already introduced comprehensive strategies to realise the health, environmental and economic benefits associated with a transition towards more plant-rich diets.
In September, the society was among 48 organisations that collaborated to publish a joint position paper proposing ten policy measures to promote the production and consumption of healthy, sustainable plant-based foods in the UK. Reaping the benefits of plant-rich diets: the ten point plan also explains how these measures will meet the government’s own goals for the food strategy. As Defra develops the substance and policy proposals of the Good Food Cycle it announced in July, we will be working with partners in the food, health, sustainability and commercial sectors to promote the plan.

The Vegan Society works with an informal network of parliamentarians to advance policies which promote the production and consumption of plant-based foods in the UK. If you are an MP or peer, or part of an MP’s team, please contact the policy team at [email protected] to learn more about this work and how you may be able to get involved.
Veganism is protected under the Human Rights Act 1998 and ethical veganism is a protected characteristic for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010, which protects religion or belief. In practice, employers and service providers such as schools and hospitals must take steps to ensure the rights of vegans are respected. The Vegan Society offers guidance and support to employers and providers about how to meet these requirements and also provides support to vegans who face discrimination or other problems.

The Vegan Society offers science-based, objective guidance on all aspects of the vegan diet and health, through our two registered dietitians. Our nutrition team monitors, analyses and reports on the latest research and developments, translating findings into accessible information for vegans and the general public. The nutrition team also provides expert input on policy work, including responding to technical policy consultations and calls for evidence, alongside training and support for health professionals.
