Over the past 34 years, the Vegan Trademark has played a pivotal role in helping brands bring innovative vegan-certified products to market, supporting both consumers and businesses in the vegan industry. Founded in 1990 by the world’s oldest vegan charity, The Vegan Society, the Vegan Trademark was created as a simple yet powerful tool to help consumers easily identify products that align with their values. The trademark has empowered shoppers to make informed choices, leading to increased accessibility of vegan products across the globe.

Today, the Vegan Trademark is internationally recognised, surpassing over 70,000 product registrations across 68 countries. These products span a diverse range of sectors, including food and drink, cosmetics, toiletries, fashion, homeware, raw materials, and more.

From multinational giants like Alpro, ASDA, and Burger King to trailblazing start-ups, the Vegan Trademark collaborates with businesses of all sizes to ensure the highest standards of vegan certification. Notable partners include well-known brands such as LUSH, Quorn, Wagamama, and the society’s longest-running trademark holder, Bio-D, which has been certified since the Vegan Trademark’s inception.

Commenting on their long-running trademarked status, Lloyd Atkin, managing director at Bio-D, said:

“Bio-D has been creating environmentally friendly, vegan cleaning products since 1989, and we’re proud to be the longest registered holder of the Vegan Trademark - signing up over 33 years ago!

“The Vegan Trademark aligns with our ethics and beliefs around animal welfare, so it was a natural decision for us to sign up. A trademark that people value and trust, it gives our customers peace of mind that we are following the requirements needed to be a registered holder.

“The recognisable logo on our product packaging is also an easy way for shoppers to know that our formulations don’t include any animal by-products, and that the contents haven’t been tested on animals.”

The Vegan Trademark has a proud history of certifying groundbreaking products, many of which have been the first of their kind to receive the vegan certification. These include Paraveganio’s paracetamol, The Bamboo Flooring Company’s sustainable flooring and Hibernian Vegan Violins. These innovations showcase the creativity and commitment of businesses driving the future of veganism.

Commenting on the trademark’s achievement Matthew Thornton, head of commercial services at The Vegan Society, said:

"Reaching 70,000 registered products with the Vegan Trademark is a fantastic milestone that reflects the growing demand for vegan products globally. Over the past 34 years, we've worked closely with brands of all sizes to make veganism more accessible and empower consumers to make informed choices.

We're incredibly proud of how far we've come and excited to see the innovation and growth that lies ahead as more companies recognise the importance of vegan certification. As we plan for the future we are looking at new ways to support businesses and services looking to cater for the growing demand in veganism, so watch this space for some exciting announcements!"
