Do you want to take part in vegan volunteering around your local area?
Join our Community Network!
We have a growing team of vegans just like you, who have a passion for volunteering and promoting veganism where they live.
Our Network chooses from a range of outreach tasks. These could include stalls at events, writing to a councillor or MP, putting up flyers in local places, or contacting local businesses. You're in control of how much or how little you do.
Could you volunteer in your local area as a vegan?
The Vegan Society's mission is to make it easier for more people to go, and stay, vegan. Our volunteer Community Network is crucial in achieving this! Across the UK, they help us to introduce veganism into local areas and support existing vegans.
Within our Community Network, we have two roles:
- Organiser
- Advocate
Organiser role
As an Organiser, you would be the leader and coordinator of your local area. Tasks are given to you by our Volunteering Coordinator, and it would then be your job to encourage Advocates in your local area to get involved and help out. You would also look for events in the area, such as vegan or sustainability fairs to attend.
This would suit somebody who is outgoing and great at organising themselves and others. Ideally, you'd be willing to stay in the role for at least a year.
Every Organiser receives an outreach pack, including a table runner, t-shirt, leaflets and banners. We make sure you are fully supported and can provide upskilling where needed.
Here are some words from our wonderful Cambridge Organiser, Arputha:
"I collaborate with local Advocates to set up stalls at vegan markets, where we share information and resources about the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. We also host friendly meetups to strengthen the local vegan community and support newcomers on their journey. Veganism has transformed my life, bringing health and peace. I now strive to share this awareness with others."
Advocate role
As an Advocate, you will have a network of other local Advocates and an Organiser to co-ordinate the group. Your Organiser will ask you to get involved with stalls at local events, complete online tasks and keep in regular contact. The exception to this is Advocates who don't have an Organiser assigned in their area yet. In these cases, tasks will come directly from the Volunteering Coordinator.
Esha, an Advocate in Edinburgh, finds the role rewarding:
"I’m someone who cares deeply and often overthinks, always asking myself if I’m doing enough. Volunteering has been the answer to that question. It takes a personal belief and turns it into action. When I join outreach conversations or share recipes, I feel part of something bigger than myself."
What kind of outreach do our volunteers do?
All of our activities are based around our campaigns and policy work. Here are just a few examples of the work we do in the Community Network every year:
- Vegan on the Go encourages local restaurants and cafes to be more inclusive of veganism by improving the availability, quality and selection of vegan products. Improving vegan options will not only make life easier for vegans but will also help others along the journey to go vegan, as well as non-vegans looking for delicious food options. Customers and businesses can request our free vegan town packs that are packed with information to help local businesses improve their vegan options.
- Lobbying MPs and other policy makers to influence laws that will make it easier to go vegan and stay vegan, through campaigns such as Catering for Everyone. Volunteers email, and sometimes visit, their local MPs to achieve this.
- Live Vegan For Less shows a more cost-effective way of preparing nutritious vegan meals that don’t compromise on flavour or variety. Through our budget-friendly three-course menus, recipes and practical money-saving tips, the campaign shows that vegan living can be affordable and more accessible. Volunteers find it impactful to distribute our menus and recipes.
- Vegan and Thriving is one of our longest-standing campaigns that shows a well-planned vegan diet can support healthy living in people of all ages. We have challenged stereotypes and encouraged positive conversations, including addressing the fact that fewer men are vegan than women. This year, we are encouraging more people to lean into their vegan identity and share why they are proud to be vegan – highlighting the many ways veganism can positively shape our lives, values and connection to others.
We're very proud of our campaign work and need your help to promote it further. Do people in your local area know enough about veganism? Do existing vegans feel supported and heard?
Here are some quotes from our wonderful volunteers here at The Vegan Society:
“Everyone is very friendly and appreciative of what I do. It's a great cause to volunteer for.”
“I love sharing ideas with other activists.”
“I enjoy meeting like-minded people and feeling less isolated in my beliefs. I also like learning how to campaign effectively.”
“I’d definitely recommend that any potential volunteers interested give it a go!”
In our Volunteer Impact Report 2025, we also found that 93% of the volunteers rated their experience as ‘excellent’ with the remaining rating it ‘good’. To see the contribution that volunteers make to The Vegan Society, read our full report.
