Ali Ryland, Vegan Society Researcher Network
University of Strathclyde

I am in the last stages of finishing my PhD in English at the University of Strathclyde. My thesis is entitled: "Why Buy the Cow When the Milk is Free?": Changing Representations of Women and Cows, from Milkmaid to Milking Machine" and builds upon my existing research on conceptions of milk and milking, undertaken during my MRes. I have written a chapter for the forthcoming Edinburgh Companion to Vegan Literature on 'Young Adult Fiction', and I am interested in contributing to a new methodological approach in academia: 'vegan theory', which brings animal liberation issues to the fore of animal studies research.
