A dog bed, created by a mum-of-two during the Covid-19 pandemic, has become the first in the world to be registered with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark.

bECOsy® is a small, family-run business that was set up by Rebecca Birtwell last January as she wanted to be at home to look after her two young children. Rebecca, who admits launching a new business during a pandemic has been challenging, was inspired to create the first ever Trademark registered pet bed after discovering that nearly two hundred animals a year can be saved by following a vegan lifestyle.

Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty wherever possible. This extends beyond the food we eat and includes the clothing and beauty products we use, and the products we give our companions. Now, animal-lovers around the world can rest assured knowing their four-legged friend is snuggled up in a bed that’s free from animal-products.

Unlike many other dog beds that are made of leather, wool or stuffed with goose feathers and down, bECOsy® beds are created using oxford cloth, natural latex, faux Sherpa fleece and polyester. They’re also chemical-free and hypoallergenic. The smaller sizes are suitable for cats that want to curl up too.

Ericka Durgahee, Business Development Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, said: “We’re pleased to have registered the first-ever companion bed with the trusted Vegan Trademark.”

“The Trademark helps clarify and reassure customers that products carrying the sunflower are free of animal ingredients and animal testing. The Vegan Society sets the highest vegan standards available so that customers can buy with confidence, and identify vegan products in a flash.”

bECOsy® founder, Rebecca, who uses the family dog, Duggee, to model her products, said: “We are so proud to stand with The Vegan Society and to be able to use their trademark on our products. We wanted to design and make a pet bed that wasn't just luxurious and comfy but also sustainable and ethical.”

“Each component we use has been certified by our suppliers as using no animal products, either within the materials themselves or in their production. They have also been certified as free-from cross-contamination to achieve the stringent Vegan Society registration.”

It’s only February, but it’s already been a year of firsts for the Trademark which last month also registered the world’s first vegan boxing equipment.

In other firsts, Forest Green Rovers became the first vegan football club in 2017, after its plant-based menu was verified by the Vegan Trademark. While in 2019, New Look became the first major High Street brand to get the Trademark.

The Vegan Trademark has been helping users identify that a product is free from animal ingredients since 1990. Registration with the Trademark gives brands the confidence to shout about their vegan credentials.
