A Leicester-based flooring company has become the first in the world to register vegan floor products with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark.

The Bamboo Flooring Company is a distributor and retailer of high-quality bamboo flooring and accessories and was established in 2004.

The news follows a long-list of ‘first’ announcements from the Vegan Trademark in the first three months of 2022, including the first vegan violin, the first paracetomal product and the first cardboard packaging.

Bamboo flooring has become increasingly popular with homeowners and renovators in recent years as customers have become more aware of its sustainability and eco-friendly credentials. Unlike hardwood trees, which take decades to reach maturity, bamboo is a rapid growing grass that can be harvested every 5 years. The bamboo grass also self re-generates and continues to grow, rather than needing to be replanted like trees.

Bamboo is one of the hardest natural materials available for flooring making it an attractive alternative to hardwood floors, not only because of its extreme durability, but also because of its low cost. Some types of bamboo flooring are over twice as hard as oak, making them popular with both commercial and domestic properties.

Ericka Durgahee, Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, said: “We are thrilled to be able to have vegan floor products registered with the Vegan Trademark and love what The Bamboo Flooring Company stand for. We know that vegan interior design is becoming more and more popular as households become aware of what they’re buying and where it is coming from. Homeowners are now in a wonderful position to not only design their homes exactly as they wish, but also to be kinder to the planet and animals by using sustainable, vegan-friendly materials for these choices.”

Chris Elliott, Director at The Bamboo Flooring Company, added: “We were really keen to carry the Vegan Trademark as we know how important it can be to some of our customers who are actively looking for vegan and eco-friendly options. As we already have a sustainable flooring product, we felt it was important we should explore other ways that bamboo flooring can help the planet. Knowing that all of our floors, including the adhesives, stains and lacquers used in production, are completely free of animal products or testing really is amazing. We’re so proud to be the first company in the world to be able to offer that option to both vegans and non-vegans alike.”

Every floor product by The Bamboo Flooring Company is now registered with the Vegan Trademark including plank style and parquet block. There’s also a choice of colours, including natural, carbonised or colour stains; while consumers can also choose between a rustic or distressed finish.
