Six brands carrying The Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark have taken home prizes from the inaugural Marie Claire UK Sustainability Awards.

The awards were launched by the magazine this year to celebrate eco-friendly businesses and encourage a move to make sustainability the norm. According to Beat the Microbead, the cosmetics industry currently produces more than 120 billion units of packaging globally every year, with 95% thrown out after one use and just 14% of plastic making it to a recycling centre.

Once shortlisted, every product faced a tough judging panel made up of more than 35 experts including sustainable fashion blogger Aditi Mayer, Sustainability Adviser Christina Archer and Andrea Thompson Editor-in-Chief at Marie Claire UK.

There were 30 winners across 60 subcatergories including fashion, food & drink, travel & leisure, and six brands carrying products registered with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark walked away with a top prize from the beauty category.

Tropic, the vegan skincare company, was crowned Best Cruelty-free Brand, while Pai Skincare, best known for its Rosehip Seed Facial Oil, won Best Organic Brand. Faith in Nature, which has 100 products registered with the Vegan Trademark, took home Best Sustainable Packaging in the Hair & Body category. Meanwhile, Authentic Beauty Concept was revealed as the winner of the Best Vegan Brand or Range – Hair.

Two trademark holders were also Highly Commended. Beauty giant The Body Shop, which recently committed to have every product formulation registered with the Vegan Trademark by the end of 2023, was recognised in the Best Ethical Initiative category, and WeDo/Professional was Highly Commended for Best Organic Brand.

Ericka Durgahee, Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many Vegan Trademark holders held up as trailblazers at the first-ever Marie Claire UK Sustainability Awards. We see first-hand how much time, effort and thought these brands put into how they can produce products that are kinder on our planet. Whether it’s The Body Shop’s new refill scheme or Faith in Nature’s completely plastic-free shampoo bars, these brands are setting an example to others in the beauty industry that you don’t need to compromise on quality in order to create green beauty products. We’d love to see even more Trademark holders nominated at next year’s awards.”

The Vegan Society is currently on a mission to cut down its plastic use and earlier this year rebranded its VEG 1 supplement, replacing the white plastic pots with aluminium tins that can be reused or recycled.
