» Vegan Trademark holder winners at 2021 Free From Food Awards

62 individual food and drink items registered with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark have taken home prizes from the 2021 Free From Food Awards.

Since 2008 over 5,000 free from products have been blind tasted by the judging panel made up of hundreds of well-known chefs, manufacturers and dieticians.

Over the course of 4 weeks, the judges were asked to taste all 600 entries before deciding on the stand-out products across 27 different categories.Twelve Trademark products were awarded Gold, 18 received Silver and 28 Bronze.

The Breakfast Category saw Asda’s Free From Pure Porridge Oats land Bronze and its Free From Special Flakes receive Silver, alongside FREEE’s Gluten Free Organic Porridge Oats. Asda’s Free From range also did well in the Store Cupboard Category winning Bronze for its Chow Mein stir fry sauce, Gravy Granules and Smoky Three Bean Chilli. Orriss & Son, a small batch sauce producer based in Cambridge, received Bronze for its Piri Piri Sauce while Quinola was awarded  Gold for its Puy Lentils and Whole Grain Quinoa.

Registered vegan products were also recognised in both the Snack Bars and the Savoury Snacks and Crackers categories with Blackfriars Bakery taking home Silver for its Cocoa, Cranberry and Orange Porridge Oat Bar while Purely Plantain Chips Nice & Spicy kettle-cooked chips gained Silver ahead of Quinola’s Bronze for Pulses and Quinoa Cakes. Mr Organic’s Gluten Free Oat Pasta Messe Rigatoni, which won Silver, was the only product registered with the Vegan Trademark to win a prize in the Pasta and Pizza Category.

Three Trademarkers were honoured in Child and Teen Friendly Food with Moo Free’s White Choc Bar and Asda’s Choc Tree Decoration taking home Silver and PlayInChoc coming out on top with Gold for its Toychoc box.

More Gold awards went to Saintly’s Dark Chocolate Tarts in the Desserts and Puddings category and Booja Booja’s selection box of chocolate truffles in The Gift category. Foodologie’s Plant Pot Roasted Roots and Fry’s Rice Protein and Chia Nuggets both took home Gold under Vegan Snacks and Meal Ideas. Saintly was also awarded Gold for Best Packaging for Free From Product for its British Apple Tarts.

Arguably the most-sought after award of the day for Product of the Year went to Vegan Trademark holder Sheese for its Smoked German Style cheese – a dairy free, gluten free and non-GMO alternative - while Retailer of the Year saw Asda and Aldi supermarkets honoured with Gold and Bronze respectively.

Julianne Ponan, founder of Creative Nature which took home Gold in the Innovation Catagory for its Gnawbles, reacted to the news: “As an allergy sufferer, I look to the Free From Awards to test products for me before I go out and buy them. To now win Gold in these incredible awards, knowing that other allergy sufferers will be looking at them, makes me so proud.”

“We strive to be safe for more consumers than any other brand, which is why we created Gnawbles free from all 14 of the ‘top’ allergens and palm oil, as well as registering with the prestigious Vegan Trademark. I hope now that people like me can enjoy tasty treats without any fear of having a reaction!”

Other brands recognised in the Innovation Category include Crackd for the no-egg egg and Organic Fava Bean Fusilli by Explore cuisine.

Ericka Durgahee, Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, added: “To see one or two Vegan Trademark holders take home prizes from this year’s Free-From Awards would be enough but to have 62 winners is just fantastic. Every year we’re seeing new, exciting and innovative vegan products hitting the shelves - there really has never been a better time to go vegan.  Both the Vegan Trademark and the Free From Food Awards make it easier for consumers to know what they’re buying is suitable for their needs whether that’s nut-free, egg-free, milk-free or vegan.”

The news comes just a week after The Vegan Society revealed 32 individual products carrying the Vegan Trademark have been selected as finalists for the 2021 Free-From Skincare Awards. The winners of these awards will be announced early July.
